Sandwich composite laminate with intraply hybrid woven CFRP/dyneema core for enhanced impact damage resistance and tolerance

The present paper investigates the response a sandwich composite laminate that involves intraply hybrid carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)/Dyneema core under impact and post-impact tests. This was designed to gain high elasticity stiffness/weight ratio of Dyneema fibers while maintaining structural integrity CFRP at core. Low-velocity compression after tests were employed evaluate damage resistance tolerance laminates. Micro-computed tomography deployed inspect different modes their propagation during low-velocity impact. results showed started in as localized matrix cracks delaminations impacted face. However, it distributed through whole thickness monolithic composites. cut initiated 70 J energy for face plies kinking due compressive stresses. lower 30 bending normal strains. delayed breakage revealed better residual (CAI) strength composite, where 33.5% improved specific CAI compared composite.
